It's basically that so ridiculously easy to get into that it's almost impossible not to, so much that I can't imagine it not having changed the way I spend my life. The book is full of fascinating statistics and anecdotes: how you're more likely than not to make the same mistake three times in a row, how even people who are perfectly rational will make decisions driven more by the unconscious, way that we are wired. This book was, in some respects, the ideal gift for my wife, who got into this research for an academic paper she was working on and loved it so much that I wrote it for her.
I wrote The Power of Habit because as my wife has been telling me, in all of her research she's realized that we can't expect our habits to change unless we really think about how to change our habits. So often we put things off because don't think we can change: we've lost the will, we don't like what did yesterday, we just can't get to it. But as long we know how to change, can: it seems that we only have a minute to make habit the new way and it takes some practice to remember the difference.

You can't just cut the ties and go to nearest Wal-Mart start buying a gallon of milk again. It takes time and discipline effort. One of the most useful techniques on book (and maybe my favorite in any book) that makes the process of habit change so much more rewarding is the idea of creating a habit loop:
"You make a habit loop."
Each time you make a new habit decision– like, maybe go to the grocery store this week– it creates a corresponding chain of actions. For example:
I go to the grocery store
I purchase an item
I go back to the grocery store a couple days later
I buy more
…and so on
Here's what makes this so valuable– and the reason why I'm going to keep coming back The Power of Habit– is that if I keep doing this for one or two months, I often end up with a perfectly self-contained habit loop,.
