In the summer of 2013 Manchester hosted its brilliant biennial International Festival. One of the highlights was the great actress Maxine Peake performing Shelley’s ‘The Masque of Anarchy’ (about the Peterloo Massacre) in The Albert Hall (I didn’t know Manchester had one!)
After the performance the madding throng, who had lapped up and hung onto her every word, were making their way down the stairs, myself among them. As I reached the top of the stairs, being jostled on all sides, I happened to look in front of me at the wall opposite and there he was, the little face you see in this photo. I managed to get a quick couple of shots which weren’t that great but it was my only opportunity. I think he was what remained when a light fixture had been removed as the building was undergoing extensive restoration work at the time. Of course, I just had to call him Albert Hall!
